Exact trig values
Foundation and HigherThe idea
Know these without a calculator: sin30∘=21, cos60∘=21, tan45∘=1, sin60∘=cos30∘=23, sin45∘=cos45∘=22, tan60∘=3, tan30∘=33.
- Learn the table for 0∘,30∘,45∘,60∘ and 90∘.
- Substitute the exact value, not a decimal.
- Leave surds in the answer when it asks for an exact value.
Watch out Exact means no rounding: 23, not 0.866.

Worked exampleNon-calculator·3 marksWrite down the exact value of each expression.
(a) sin30∘
(b) cos60∘
(c) tan45∘
- (a) From half an equilateral triangle: opposite 1, hypotenuse 2.
- (b) In the same triangle, the side next to 60∘ is 1 and the hypotenuse 2.
- (c) A right-angled isosceles triangle has opposite = adjacent, so tan45∘=1.
Answer (a) 21; (b) 21; (c) 1
Your turn
Question 1Non-calculator·3 marksθ is an acute angle.
(a) cosθ=23. Write down the value of θ.
(b) Work out the value of sin90∘−cos0∘+tan45∘.
Question 2Non-calculator·4 marksThe diagram shows triangle PQR.
(a) Find the exact length of PR.
(b) Find the exact length of QR.
Question 3Non-calculator·6 marksThe diagram shows triangle ABC. D is the point on BC such that AD is perpendicular to BC.
(a) Work out the exact length of BC. Give your answer in the form a+b3.
(b) Work out the exact length of AB.
