Reverse percentages

Foundation and Higher

The idea

After a percentage change you can find the original by dividing by the multiplier. If a price after a 20%20\% rise is £72\text{£}72, the original is 72÷1.2=£6072 \div 1.2 = \text{£}60.

  1. Write the multiplier for the change: up 20%20\% is 1.21.2, down 20%20\% is 0.80.8.
  2. Divide the new amount by the multiplier.
  3. Simple interest is the same amount each year: £500\text{£}500 at 3%3\% for 44 years earns 4×£15=£604 \times \text{£}15 = \text{£}60.

Watch out Do not take 20%20\% of the new price off: 20%20\% of £72\text{£}72 is not the rise.
