On results day, when the boards publish the boundaries for that summer's exams.

Do grade boundaries change every year?

Yes. The board sets new boundaries after each series, so the same total can earn a different grade in another year.

What it does

GCSE grade boundaries for Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science, English Language and English Literature, and your grade from your paper marks.

GCSE qualification grade boundaries from AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR, for every series and route whose papers add up to the published total.

Method

  1. Pick the series and your route. We read that series' qualification boundaries.
  2. Your paper marks are added up. Where a paper is scaled, its mark is multiplied by the board's scaling factor first.
  3. Your grade is the highest grade whose boundary your total reaches. The gap is the marks from your total to the next boundary.
