How we work this out
What it does
Pick a 9 to 1 grade to see the old letter, or a letter to see today's grade, from Ofqual's own comparison.
GCSEs in England, graded 9 to 1 since 2017 (Maths and English) and 2019 (every subject), compared with the A* to G letters used before.
Method
- Ofqual fixed three anchor points: the bottom of a 7 is the bottom of an old A, the bottom of a 4 is the bottom of a C, and the bottom of a 1 is the bottom of a G.
- The other grades follow Ofqual's chart: 9 and 8 replace A* and A with 7; 6, 5 and 4 replace B and C; 3, 2 and 1 replace D to G.
- A 4 is a standard pass and a 5 a strong pass (Department for Education).
