Speaking preparation

Paper 2 is a role-play, reading aloud with a short conversation, and a photo card with an unprepared conversation. Practise these prompts aloud, with a friend, a parent or your teacher. Nothing here is recorded or marked: the course has no audio.

One card of each kind is free. The course opens all 12 role-plays, 12 reading-aloud texts, 9 photo cards and the conversation questions for all 9 topics.

Reading aloud

Identity and relationships with others · Foundation · 57 words

Sounds to watch
  • Silent final consonants: the s of 'mes', 'ans' and 'affaires', the t of 'et', 'est' and 'rit', and the d and s of 'grands' are not pronounced. In 'petite' the t is sounded because an e follows it.
  • Liaison: 'nous allons' and 'mes affaires' join up with the s sounded as a z (nou-zallons, mé-zaffaires), and 'huit ans' links with a t (hui-tan).
  • Nasal vowels: an, am and en in 'ans', 'prend', 'dimanche', 'campagne', 'entends' and 'ensemble' are said through the nose with no n sound at the end; 'mon', 'bon' and 'allons' have the on nasal, and 'bien' has the ien nasal.
  • The French r, made at the back of the throat: 'Rennes', 'père', 'sœur', 'très', 'drôle', 'prépare', 'repas'.
  • gn in 'campagne' sounds like the ny in canyon.
  • ou in 'souvent', 'nous' and 'toujours' sounds like the oo in food; ui in 'huit' is a quick wee sound.
  • é in 'Léa' and 'prépare' is a closed sound; è in 'père' and 'très' is open, like the e in bed.
Then answer these questions
  1. Comment est ta famille ?
  2. Tu t'entends bien avec qui ? Pourquoi ?
  3. Qu'est-ce que tu fais avec ta famille le week-end ?
  4. Qu'est-ce que tu as fait avec ta famille récemment ?
