Composite and inverse functions

Higher only

The idea

fg(x)fg(x) means do gg first, then ff. The inverse f−1(x)f^{-1}(x) undoes ff: write y=f(x)y = f(x), rearrange for xx, then swap the letters.

  1. For fg(x)fg(x), substitute g(x)g(x) into ff wherever there is an xx.
  2. For f−1(x)f^{-1}(x), write y=f(x)y = f(x) and make xx the subject.
  3. Replace yy with xx in your answer.

Watch out fg(x)fg(x) is not f(x)×g(x)f(x) \times g(x), and gg goes first.

Worked exampleNon-calculator5 marks

f(x)=3x−5f(x) = 3x - 5 and g(x)=x2g(x) = x^2.

(a) Find f(4)f(4).

(b) Find fg(2)fg(2).

(c) Find f−1(x)f^{-1}(x).

  1. (a) f(4)=3×4−5=7f(4) = 3 \times 4 - 5 = 7.
  2. (b) fg(2)fg(2) means apply gg first: g(2)=4g(2) = 4.
  3. Then f(4)=7f(4) = 7.
  4. (c) Write y=3x−5y = 3x - 5 and make xx the subject. y+5=3x⇒x=y+53y + 5 = 3x \Rightarrow x = \frac{y + 5}{3}
  5. So f−1(x)=x+53f^{-1}(x) = \frac{x + 5}{3}.

Answer (a) 77; (b) 77; (c) f−1(x)=x+53f^{-1}(x) = \dfrac{x + 5}{3}

Question 1Calculator allowed2 marks

The function f is defined by f(x) = (3x −- 7)/2. Find f−1f^{-1}(x).

Question 2Non-calculator3 marks

f(u) = u2u^{2} + 2 for u ≥\ge 0, and g(x) = 3x −- 1. Solve f(g(x)) = 38, taking account of the domain of f.

Question 3Non-calculator4 marks

f(x)=5−2xf(x) = 5 - 2x.

Find the value of aa for which f(a)=f−1(a)f(a) = f^{-1}(a).
