Perpendicular lines

Higher only

The idea

Perpendicular lines meet at right angles, and their gradients multiply to −1-1. If one line has gradient mm, a perpendicular line has gradient −1m-\frac{1}{m}.

  1. Find the gradient of the given line.
  2. Flip it and change the sign: 23\frac{2}{3} becomes −32-\frac{3}{2}.
  3. Use a point on the new line to find cc.

Watch out Flip the gradient and change its sign: both steps are needed.

Line LL has equation y=2x−3y = 2x - 3.

(a) Write down the gradient of a line perpendicular to LL.

(b) Find the equation of the line perpendicular to LL that passes through (4,1)(4, 1).

  1. (a) Perpendicular gradients multiply to −1-1: 2×m=−12 \times m = -1, so m=−12m = -\frac{1}{2}.
  2. (b) Substitute (4,1)(4, 1) into y=−12x+cy = -\frac{1}{2}x + c. 1=−2+c⇒c=31 = -2 + c \Rightarrow c = 3
  3. y=−12x+3y = -\frac{1}{2}x + 3.

Answer (a) −12-\frac{1}{2}; (b) y=−12x+3y = -\frac{1}{2}x + 3
