Foundation and Higher

The idea

Rearranging a formula is solving it for a letter: do the same to both sides until the letter is on its own. From v=u+atv = u + at, t=v−uat = \frac{v - u}{a}.

  1. Undo the operations around the letter, last one first.
  2. Apply each step to the whole of each side.
  3. Higher tier: if the letter appears twice, collect those terms and factorise.

Watch out Dividing v−uv - u by aa divides both terms: v−ua\frac{v - u}{a}, not v−uav - \frac{u}{a}.

The time, TT minutes, to roast a chicken of mass ww kg is given by T=40w+20T = 40w + 20.

Work out the roasting time for a chicken of mass 2.52.5 kg. Give your answer in hours and minutes.

  1. T=40×2.5+20=100+20=120T = 40 \times 2.5 + 20 = 100 + 20 = 120 minutes.
  2. 120 minutes is 2 hours.

Answer 2 hours
