Negative and fractional indices

The idea

A negative power means a reciprocal: x−n=1xnx^{-n} = \frac{1}{x^n}. A fractional power means a root: x1n=xnx^{\frac{1}{n}} = \sqrt[n]{x} and xmn=(xn)mx^{\frac{m}{n}} = (\sqrt[n]{x})^m.

  1. Deal with a negative sign first by taking the reciprocal.
  2. Then the bottom of the fraction: take that root.
  3. Then the top: raise to that power. 8−23=1(83)2=148^{-\frac{2}{3}} = \frac{1}{(\sqrt[3]{8})^2} = \frac{1}{4}.

Watch out A negative power does not make the answer negative: 2−3=182^{-3} = \frac{1}{8}.

Worked exampleNon-calculator6 marks

Find the value of each expression. Do not use a calculator.

(a) 251225^{\frac{1}{2}}

(b) 8−18^{-1}

(c) 272327^{\frac{2}{3}}

(d) (49)−12\left(\frac{4}{9}\right)^{-\frac{1}{2}}

  1. (a) A power of 12\frac{1}{2} is a square root: 25=5\sqrt{25} = 5.
  2. (b) A negative power is a reciprocal: 8−1=188^{-1} = \frac{1}{8}.
  3. (c) Take the cube root first, then square. 2723=(273)2=32=927^{\frac{2}{3}} = \left(\sqrt[3]{27}\right)^2 = 3^2 = 9
  4. (d) The negative index flips the fraction: (94)12\left(\frac{9}{4}\right)^{\frac{1}{2}}.
  5. The square root of each part: 32\frac{3}{2}.

Answer (a) 55; (b) 18\frac{1}{8}; (c) 99; (d) 32\frac{3}{2}

Your turn

Question 1Non-calculator3 marks

Do not use a calculator.

(a) Find the value of (116)−34\left(\frac{1}{16}\right)^{-\frac{3}{4}}.

(b) Write 5−25^{-2} as a decimal.

Question 2Non-calculator5 marks

Work with exact values and no calculator.

(a) Work out 272/3×16−1/227^{2/3}\times16^{-1/2}.

(b) Solve 3x=1/273^x=1/27.

Question 3Non-calculator6 marks

Show clear working. Do not use a calculator.

(a) Solve 4x×2x+3=3224^x \times 2^{x + 3} = 32^2. You must show your working.

(b) 912×27n=3−49^{\frac{1}{2}} \times 27^n = 3^{-4}. Find the value of nn. You must show your working.
