Surds

Higher only

The idea

A surd is a root that cannot be written as a whole number or a fraction (an irrational root), left exact, like 2\sqrt{2}. Simplify by taking out square factors: 48=16×3=43\sqrt{48} = \sqrt{16 \times 3} = 4\sqrt{3}. Rationalise ab\frac{a}{\sqrt{b}} by multiplying top and bottom by b\sqrt{b}.

  1. a×b=ab\sqrt{a} \times \sqrt{b} = \sqrt{ab}.
  2. Find the largest square factor to simplify.
  3. 63=633=23\frac{6}{\sqrt{3}} = \frac{6\sqrt{3}}{3} = 2\sqrt{3}; for 12+3\frac{1}{2 + \sqrt{3}}, multiply by 2−32 - \sqrt{3}.

Watch out 9+16\sqrt{9 + 16} is 55, not 3+43 + 4: roots do not split over addition.

Worked exampleNon-calculator5 marks

Do not use a calculator. Give each answer in its simplest exact form.

(a) Simplify 48\sqrt{48}

(b) Expand and simplify (3+2)(3−2)(3 + \sqrt{2})(3 - \sqrt{2})

(c) Rationalise the denominator of 63\dfrac{6}{\sqrt{3}} and simplify.

  1. (a) Use the largest square factor: 48=16×348 = 16 \times 3, so 48=163=43\sqrt{48} = \sqrt{16}\sqrt{3} = 4\sqrt{3}.
  2. (b)  9−32+32−2=79 - 3\sqrt{2} + 3\sqrt{2} - 2 = 7
  3. (c) Multiply top and bottom by 3\sqrt{3}. 63×33=633=23\frac{6}{\sqrt{3}} \times \frac{\sqrt{3}}{\sqrt{3}} = \frac{6\sqrt{3}}{3} = 2\sqrt{3}

Answer (a) 434\sqrt{3}; (b) 77; (c) 232\sqrt{3}
