Simplifying and index laws

Foundation and Higher

The idea

Like terms have the same letters and powers, so they combine: 3x+5x=8x3x + 5x = 8x, but 3x+5x23x + 5x^2 cannot. Index laws: xa×xb=xa+bx^a \times x^b = x^{a+b}, xa÷xb=xa−bx^a \div x^b = x^{a-b} and (xa)b=xab(x^a)^b = x^{ab}.

  1. Group like terms, keeping the sign in front of each.
  2. Multiply the numbers, then add the powers of each letter.
  3. (2x3)2=4x6(2x^3)^2 = 4x^6: square the 22 as well.

Watch out x3×x4=x7x^3 \times x^4 = x^7, not x12x^{12}.

Worked exampleNon-calculator2 marks

Simplify 7m + 3n −- 2m + 5n.

  1.  7m−2m+3n+5n7m-2m+3n+5n
  2. Collect the m terms: 7m −- 2m = 5m.
  3. Collect the n terms: 3n + 5n = 8n.

Answer 5m+8n5m + 8n
