Expressions, equations and identities

Foundation and Higher

The idea

An expression has no equals sign (3x+23x + 2). An equation is true for particular values (3x+2=113x + 2 = 11). A formula links quantities (A=lwA = lw). An identity is true for every value (2(x+1)≡2x+22(x + 1) \equiv 2x + 2).

  1. Write 3×n3 \times n as 3n3n and n×nn \times n as n2n^2.
  2. Terms are the parts joined by ++ or −-.
  3. Check the sign in front of a term belongs to it.

Watch out You simplify an expression but solve an equation.

Simplify or write each expression.

(a) Simplify a+a+a+aa + a + a + a

(b) Simplify 3×m×n3 \times m \times n

(c) Pens cost 4545p each and rubbers cost 3030p each. Write an expression for the total cost, in pence, of xx pens and yy rubbers.

  1. (a) Four lots of aa is 4a4a.
  2. (b) Write the number first and leave out the multiplication signs: 3mn3mn.
  3. (c) xx pens cost 45x45x pence and yy rubbers cost 30y30y pence, so the total is 45x+30y45x + 30y.

Answer (a) 4a4a; (b) 3mn3mn; (c) 45x+30y45x + 30y
