Marking pilot pack
For the head of department, the data protection lead and finance
1. What you are buying
- Product
- A workspace for marking typed AQA 8700 English Language Question 5 responses (Paper 1 or Paper 2) against your department's rubric.
- Pilot
- £300 once: 90 days, 5 teachers, 300 scripts.
- Year
- £1,200 once: 365 days, 5 teachers, 1,200 scripts. After a paid pilot, £900 (the pilot is credited once).
- What counts
- Each script that gets a suggestion. Failed suggestions and retries are free; a changed resubmission is a new script.
- Limits
- Typed responses of 40 to 1,500 words; 30 per upload, 60 per assignment. No handwriting, other questions or other boards.
- Paying
- Card, through Stripe, with a paid invoice in your school's name. No renewal. No VAT is charged.
- Set-up
- Self-serve: pay, invite colleagues, start an assignment. No call or training is needed.
2. How a mark is made
- A teacher enters the task and the department's rubric, then uploads typed scripts under aliases such as 11B-07.
- For each script, an AI model suggests a mark for each criterion and quotes the pupil's exact sentences behind it. Quotes that are not in the script are removed and the script is flagged.
- A teacher reads the evidence, changes any mark and approves it. Nothing is exported until a teacher approves it.
- A colleague can second-mark a sample spread across the mark range.
- Nothing is sent to pupils or parents. Teachers export a spreadsheet, a class report or feedback sheets.
3. Who does what with the data
Your school is the controller of the scripts and marks your teachers put into the workspace. Uni Admissions Prep Ltd is your processor for them and acts only on your instructions: these terms and what your teachers do in the workspace. For teachers' own accounts, we are the controller under our privacy policy at unigenius.co.uk/privacy.
- Data
- Typed scripts under aliases; the task and rubric; suggested and approved marks and comments; teachers' email addresses; usage counts.
- Not collected
- Pupils' names, email addresses, dates of birth, SEND records or MIS data. The upload refuses aliases that look like a full name or contain an email address.
- Who sees scripts
- Only the department's active teachers. Billing contacts see usage counts only. Another department's teacher cannot reach them.
- The AI model
- Receives one script, the task and the rubric at a time; never a name or email address, and never the alias.
- Security
- Encrypted in transit. Every read starts from the signed-in teacher's membership of the department.
- Breaches
- We tell the lead teacher without undue delay after becoming aware of a breach affecting your scripts, with what we know and what we are doing.
4. Subprocessors
| Provider | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase, Inc. | The database: accounts, rosters, classes, set work and progress | United States (AWS, North Virginia) |
| Vercel, Inc. | Hosts the site and runs its servers | Servers in the United States (Washington, D.C.); pages served from the nearest edge, London for UK schools |
| Resend, Inc. | Sends sign-in, licence and service emails | Sent from Ireland (EU) |
| OpenRouter, Inc. | Passes messages to Mia, the AI tutor, and written answers sent for AI marking to a company that runs a DeepSeek model, which it picks for each request. It receives the message or answer and the question, never a name or email address. Marking scripts go only to endpoints with zero data retention (see the marking pilot pack) | OpenRouter in the United States; the company running the model may be in the United States or another country |
| Stripe | Takes card payments (teachers and finance staff only, never pupils) | UK, EU and United States |
Where a subprocessor handles data outside the UK, the transfer relies on UK adequacy regulations or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum. We update this list before adding a provider, and you may object.
How a script reaches the AI model
| Step | Who | Where | What they keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sends one script with the task and rubric. Never a name, email address or the alias. | Our server (Vercel, Inc.) | United States (Washington, D.C.) | The script and suggestion, on your retention schedule (section 5). |
| Receives the request and chooses which endpoint answers it. The request tells OpenRouter to use only endpoints on its Zero Data Retention list and never a provider that stores or trains on prompts; if no such endpoint is free, no suggestion is made and the script is not charged. | OpenRouter, Inc. | United States | Request details without the text (time, model, size, cost). Under its published policy it stores the text only if the account opts in to logging, and it may categorise a small sample of prompts anonymously with a zero-retention model. |
| Runs a DeepSeek model on the script and returns the suggested marks. | The endpoint OpenRouter picks: a company hosting the model on its Zero Data Retention list | Varies by request: the United States or another country | Nothing: a zero-retention endpoint stores neither the script nor the reply. |
The free try on /teach/marking takes the same route. OpenRouter publishes its Zero Data Retention endpoints and their companies at openrouter.ai/docs/features/zdr; the endpoint can change from one script to the next within that list. We work with OpenRouter under its published terms and privacy policy and have no separate contract with the endpoint company. The model name is recorded against each suggestion. Changing the model, OpenRouter or the zero-retention rule is a subprocessor change: we update this pack first, and you may object.
5. Retention
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Typed scripts, the AI suggestions and teachers' comments | Deleted after 30, 60 or 90 days (the lead teacher chooses; 90 by default), or at once when a teacher deletes an assignment's scripts |
| Approved marks against each pupil alias | Kept for the department's record after scripts are deleted; deleted within one month of the lead's written request |
| Teachers' accounts (email address) | Until the teacher deletes their account |
| Order, invoice and payment records | Six years, for tax and accounting |
| A script pasted into the free try on /teach/marking | Not stored: sent to the model and back to the browser only |
6. For your DPIA
- Lawful basis
- Usually public task (state schools) or legitimate interests (independent schools): your school decides.
- Automated decisions
- None. A teacher approves every mark; the suggestion has no effect until then.
- Main risk
- A pupil's name typed inside a script. Teachers remove names before uploading; scripts are deleted on your schedule.
- Pupil rights
- We help you answer requests to see, correct or delete a pupil's script or marks.
7. Standard terms
- Who you buy from. Uni Admissions Prep Ltd, trading as UniGenius (company 17325935, 28 Denton Close, Barnet, EN5 3AP, United Kingdom). You are the school that pays. These terms apply with our general terms at unigenius.co.uk/terms; where they differ, these apply.
- What you get. Use of the marking workspace for typed AQA 8700 English Language Question 5 responses. The pilot: £300 once for 90 days, up to 5 teachers and 300 scripts with suggestions. The year: £1,200 once for 365 days, up to 5 teachers and 1,200 scripts.
- The pilot credit. If your department paid for a pilot, £300 comes off one year bought for that department, once: you pay £900. The year starts on payment and unused pilot scripts carry over. Later years are £1,200.
- Paying. By card through Stripe, which emails a paid invoice in your school's name. No VAT is charged.
- No renewal. Each pilot or year is one payment. Nothing renews or charges again, and there are no overage charges: when the scripts are used, teachers mark the rest themselves.
- Refunds. The lead teacher can refund a department's first order in full from the workspace within 14 days of paying, while fewer than 60 scripts have had suggestions. A year added to a pilot is not refundable once paid, except where the law says otherwise.
- Suggestions and marks. The workspace suggests marks against the rubric your department enters. A teacher checks, changes and approves every mark; only approved marks are exported. Suggestions are practice assistance, not AQA marks, grade predictions or endorsements, and you remain responsible for the marks your teachers give.
- Your scripts. Upload your own pupils' typed work under aliases, never names or email addresses. You keep all rights in the scripts and marks. We use them only to run your workspace, never for advertising or to train a model.
- Access. The lead teacher invites colleagues by email; billing contacts see usage only. Keep invite links to the people they are for. We may suspend a department that is used against these terms.
- When it ends. At the end of the term, after a refund, or if the payment is disputed, the workspace stops taking new work. Approved marks stay readable and exportable.
- Liability. Our total liability under these terms is limited to what you paid for the order concerned. Nothing limits liability that cannot be limited by law. The service is provided with reasonable care; we do not promise it will be uninterrupted.
- Law. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and its courts have jurisdiction.
