The extract

Allotment

In this poem the speaker remembers her grandfather and the allotment where he grew vegetables.

  1. 1He kept the key on a loop of orange string,
  2. 2the shed door swollen shut each spring
  3. 3until his shoulder taught it how to open.
  4. 4Inside: twine, a radio that only spoke
  5. 5in weather, seed packets labelled in his capitals
  6. 6as if the earth might not believe him otherwise.
  7. 7He never said he loved us. He said dig,
  8. 8and showed me where the worms were, how to hold
  9. 9a fork so the blade went in without a fight.
  10. 10This March I found his gloves still on the nail,
  11. 11the fingers curled around a shape of nothing,
  12. 12and stood there while the rain did all the talking.
  13. 13Now I plant his beans in rows he would call crooked.
  14. 14They come up anyway, green fists, unasked.
