Speaking preparation
Paper 2 is a role-play, reading aloud with a short conversation, and a photo card with an unprepared conversation. Practise these prompts aloud, with a friend, a parent or your teacher. Nothing here is recorded or marked: the course has no audio.
One card of each kind is free. The course opens all 12 role-plays, 12 reading-aloud texts, 9 photo cards and the conversation questions for all 9 topics.

Reading aloud
Identity and relationships with others · Foundation · 46 words
Sounds to watch
- ei sounds like the English word 'eye': 'heiße', 'meiner', 'meinem', 'kleinen'. ie sounds like the ee in 'see': 'sieben'.
- w is said like an English v: 'wohne', 'Wochenende', 'wir'.
- z sounds like ts: 'Zürich', 'zusammen'. sp at the start of 'spielen' sounds like shp.
- ü is made by rounding your lips as for oo and saying ee: 'Zürich', 'süß'. ä in 'erzählt' is like the e in 'bed', held a little longer.
- ch after i, e or ä is soft, like a cat's hiss: 'ich', 'Geschichten', and also in 'manchmal'. After a, o, u or au it is hard, as in Scottish 'loch': 'auch'.
- ß is a sharp s: 'heiße', 'süß', 'Fußball'. s at the start of a word before a vowel sounds like an English z: 'sieben', 'sehr'.
- Final -d sounds like t: 'und'. Unstressed -er at the end of 'Mutter', 'Bruder' and 'meiner' is a soft 'uh' sound, not a hard r.
Then answer these questions
- Wie ist deine Familie?
- Verstehst du dich gut mit deiner Familie? Warum (nicht)?
- Was machst du am Wochenende mit deiner Familie?
- Was hast du neulich mit deinen Großeltern oder Freunden gemacht?
