GCSE German translation, both ways
There are two translations, each worth 10 marks: German into English at the end of the reading paper, and English into German in the writing paper.
| Into English | Paper 3, Section B, 10 marks |
|---|---|
| Into German | Paper 4, 10 marks |
| Foundation | At least 35 words |
| Higher | At least 50 words |
Into English
Translate the meaning, not word by word. Keep every tense, negative and time word, and write natural English: «ich bin ins Kino gegangen» is «I went to the cinema», not «I am gone into the cinema».
Into German
Check each verb for the person and the tense, put the verb in the right place (second, or at the end after weil and dass), give every noun its capital letter, and use the words from the vocabulary list you know well. A short, accurate sentence is worth more than a long one with the meaning lost.

How does the course mark a translation?
Each passage is split into ten parts. A part is credited when your translation carries its meaning in one of the ways we accept, and you see every part with an accepted version. Your teacher may accept other good versions too.
