IGCSE Maths formulas: what is given and what to learn

Page 2 of every paper lists formulas for areas, surfaces and volumes. The Extended list adds the quadratic formula, the sine rule, the cosine rule and the area of a triangle using sine. Not every formula you need is given.

Given on every paperTriangle and circle areas, circumference, curved surfaces, prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone and sphere
Given on Papers 2 and 4The quadratic formula, the sine rule, the cosine rule, area = ½ab sin C
LearnSimple and compound interest, Pythagoras' theorem, the trigonometric ratios, areas of shapes other than triangles

Formulas you must know

  • Simple and compound interest, percentage change and reverse percentages.
  • Pythagoras' theorem and sine, cosine and tangent in right-angled triangles.
  • Areas of rectangles, parallelograms and trapezia, and arc length and sector area as fractions of a circle.

Using a given formula well

Write the formula, substitute the numbers in brackets, then work it out. On the calculator papers keep the unrounded value for the next part.

Questions people ask

Is the formula list the same for Core and Extended?

The Core list has the area and volume formulas. The Extended list has those and four more: the quadratic formula, the sine rule, the cosine rule and the area of a triangle using sine.

Is the formula for the area of a trapezium given?

No. Except for the area of a triangle, area formulas for flat shapes are not on the list.
